Datil peppers are notoriously finicky to grow, requiring much more hands-on care than habaneros or jalapeños. This makes them one of the rarest chili peppers in the world.

Mayhem Datil Pepper Buying Guidance

  • There are only two colors in heirloom datil peppers. In our opinion, Mature Green Datil Peppers have a more green earthy overtone with slightly less heat. Unlike a tomato, datil peppers do not ripen off the vine. As a Datil Pepper ripens it transitions from green through yellow to brilliant orange, "All Ripe". We feel the flavor is sweeter and the heat level increases.

  • "Mixed color" Mayhem Datil Pepper packages include mature green datil peppers with some "all ripe'" orange, with the majority green (95%).

  • Again, Datil Peppers do not ripen off the vine like tomatoes. If you prefer "All Ripe" orange Datil Peppers, please choose our "All Ripe" Orange Datil Pepper option. There is a higher cost due to more vine time.

  • All Datil Pepper Orders are shipping with the "stems-on" the peppers to keep them fresher while enroute.

  • 1/4 lb. packages included 15+ datils, 1/2 lb. packages include 30+ datils, and 1 lb. packages include 60+ datils. The Datil Pepper has a wide variety of mature sizes.

  • Monday afternoon, we lightly vacuum seal your Mayhem Datil Peppers with a paper towel to absorb moisture then box for shipping.

  • Our Mayhem Datil Peppers show up fresh almost every time but in case yours do not, please take pictures of the peppers and the packaging. Email us and we will gladly send out more datils or give you a refund.
